"Get a pic! Do a blog!"

"Heroes are over with!"  Something I've kicking around for a couple of weeks is throwing up a flare to see if some readers would like to make a post on this blog.  Then it occurred to me.  Specifically the line from Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog when Dr Horrible's terrorizing the people at the Caring Hands Homeless Shelter build dedication meeting.

When I first started taking pics of my Dark Eldar I was throwing them up on my crapbook account.  Was surprised how much of a motivation it was to put them together and paint them just to put pics on my page.  It then occurred to me to take pics of the games as well.  Would model at Fantasy Flight on Sundays from 1pm til close.  Buddy of mine Lane came out a couple of times, which was always fun.  It became sort of a ritual.  Even something I looked forward to.  Then I started going to Fantasy Flight and model on other days besides just Sun.  Slowly but surely the army came together.  Paint started landing on the models.  It was a damn good time.

Before Dark Eldar I was working on my Space Marine Noir Engel army.  My place didn't have a modelling space or lighting at that time so Fantasy Flight it was.  As soon as I sat down at the modelling table I would put my iPod in, unpack the toys for that session then start working. At the apex of modelling at Fantasy Flight I would model/paint there 5 days a week.  They are closed Mon and Fri was game night.

Getting to the point of this post.  Best way I've found to have a painted army on the table and slowly chop away at that ever growing pile of toy soldiers is to post them online.  Which lead to creating a blog.  Far more appropriate medium for my hobby then spamming people on crapbook about stuff they know next to nothing about.

Blogging can be an excellent motivator to complete those models, play more games and learn about your tabletop wargaming.  Feedback from viewers help you look outside of the box you're used to operating in.  There's also a challenge to up your modelling and painting skills when presenting your works to the viewers.

[while composing this post 13.1.31 in the last week three blogs have mentioned about readers making posts to place on their blogs]

Don't worry about having little skill in painting, typing/writing or gaming.  Just be.  It may sound new-agey or zen.  There's comfort in that.  Just be.  Post pics of your games, models and/or conversions.  Post only finished models or show the progress of applying one colour at a time.  The choice is yours.  It is your blog.  Do what you will with it.

One of the best things about blogging is its your page.  You choose its format and where things go.  Get to play with the colours and contents of those boxes.  It is your sandbox.  You can even attempt to make money through Google's Adsense.  Put up posts about your models then rants about how Dark Eldar players are all liars and cheats (line from a buddy of mine).  Put up picks of cheerleaders or attractive celebrities.  Make posts about your tactics or past games.  Gripes about your plastic crack.  It is your blog, express yourself.  Just be.

There are a lot of bloggers that someone new to blogging can consult should any questions come up.

  1. Blogs for the Blog God!!! Posts for the Post throne!!! Start a blog with your friends if you feel that there isn't enough content to offer by yourself.

    1. Zab, damn! That is just extremely solid advice. I completely agree. If you don't feel you have enouch content yourself start a blog with a friend. Two minds are better than one.

Plus when things start picking up for the co-authors their blog will be updated so frequently they will collect an audience in no time. Views and hits will go through the roof.

      Great stuff, Zab!
