Space Hulk: a Game Review

Some months ago Games Workshop re-released a classic game of theirs.  Space Hulk.  I've always wanted to play it and finally had an opportunity.

JJ tying, here are my first impressions of the game.

First of all there's a game before the game.  You pick a mission.  Then you get to hunt down the specific tiles for the mission.  This is terribly exciting.  Using the map to figure out which tile they are using and looking for it.  Then arranging those tiles on the table and putting them together.  Holy Batman it is fun!

Then there are doors.  Just punching out the them from the cardboard is fun.  Going through the pieces and assembling them, doors on stands is also fun.  Have I mentioned how much fun just the set up of this game is?  Trust me it is fun.

This was our third (?) game.  Different mission with different tiles.  At this time we learned the map of the different missions don't always show breaks.  You might need two tiles to make up one.  Usually there are marks on the mission in the book indicating the separation of tiles.

Now with all the tiles arranged to look like the mission map it was time to play.

This was from our first game and damn I lost hard.  Suijin only need to use one Blood Angel to stop all my Genestealers.  He was laughing about it all night.

Overall the game is solid with well thought out rules.  It is fast paced and fairly easy to pick up.  The miniatures are great and east to put together.  If you get a chance play this game, it is really fun.

Game tips:

  • If you're playing Genestealers don't focus your deployment on just one end of the map.  Spread out.  Certainly helped in Joe's game.
  • If it is your first time playing the game suggest doing what Joe did and tip the hour glass on its side to pause the time while looking up rules.
  • Read through the rules carefully especially mission permeters.  In one game I was running the Blood Angels used Assault Cannon inside the control room which is a no-no.

If you get a chance to play this game.  Let me know how you like it.

  1. It's the only game i still play from GW. I painted up the first set as soul drinkers vs kraken and bought the second release this year. Probably paint and convert them up as Deathwing vs classic blue and purple stealers :) With 2 sets you can have deadfalls and two maps going to represent different levels of the space hulk so the team can get really spread out and cut off.

    1. Very cool!

When we were deciding which mission to play from the last game I saw a map that contained two levels. Was like FTS! So far we've played 3 of the 16 (?) missions. Plan to go through them all before replaying missions.
