Most of the time spent airbrushing

Been working with my airbrush quite a bit recently and damn I'm loving it.  Very much like the McDonald's jingle.  I've often been in awe of Imperial Guard Valkyries that were airbrushed.  Asking a guy at Fantasy Flight about how he did that he said blue tape.  Ah, blue tape.  It masks part of the model that we don't want to airbrush.

Working on my Grey Knights Rhinos this how I spent most of the time.

Took about 14 mins to mask off parts of the model.

While it's terribly effective and you can do some cool patterns.  If you're airbrushing tanks and other large models that you don't want your paint going everywhere this is how you'll spend most of your time.  There is another method to mask off models instead of using blue tape.  I haven't tried it yet so I don't want to talk out of my ass about it.  Much rather provide informed information about something I do know than to make something up and hoping no one fact checks me.

Airbrushing this was fast and easy.  Taping it off.  Not really.  Dare I say it's the same speed as hand-painting.  Perhaps hand-painting is shorter.  The difference is the finish.

If you have a method of masking of your model for airbrushing feel free to drop some education on me.

  1. I recently looked at a blog of yellow necrons, he was airbrushing these all yellow and using silly putty for masking tape. Can not remember the site, but it might be worth doing a search on the silly putty.

    2. What I've seen the silly putty seems to be for more odd shapes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZhxSs70wgo

If you are looking for straight lines I don't know if you can do better than tape. I wonder if it is possible to get tape that is not as wide??? I mean in the painting tape variety.

    3. The artist tape purchased from blick is comes in various sizes. Seems to do a better job than blue tape. Lane and I have actually talked about straight lines. It was a great idea.
